A bit of history
Since 1200 A.D. the Laplanders - "masters in skiing techniques and in the art of ski modeling", have been exporting to Norway, besides the ski, the way to use them as well.
Around 1660, during a trip to Lapland the parish priest of Ravenna, Francesco Negri, has transferred this knowledge to Italians as well. After the end of the 1800 Paolo Kind has started the skiing activity. The first competitions of North ski reserved to military skiers took place in 1898.
The cross country ski has had a great development during the first world war thanks to the need to form skiing teams that were skilled by foreigner instructors of wide experience. In 1903 Victor Sohn and Bilgieri discover the ski wax that replaced the seal skin used since the origin of the skiing. The new discovery was composed of bee wax and this was not only making ski slide easier, but also it wouldn't allow sliding backwards.
The alternated step was the only technique used before 1974. This is also considered as turning point year in the history of this sport because by introducing of the first ski built from synthetic materials instead of wood, the skiing technique reached a much higher speed.
During the Olympic games in 1976, Adidas company presented the ski boot with junctions that exceeded only slightly the ski width, resulting in a minor friction and a higher speed. Since then a major importance has been given to the arm movement. At the same time the snow slope building means also developed and improved a lot.
The slopes became wider and smoother, ski became faster and thus have lead to a new way of walking similar to the one of skating, the so called skating walk.
After 1980 almost all sportsmen started using this kind of walking, as they realized its effective efficiency.

Practical advices
Waxing your ski allow you to avoid the insole getting too much oxidized and at the same time it make it smoother and faster sliding and thus good for any type of snow and slope condition. It's important to wax your ski immediately after you have bought them and continue doing it at least twice a season and then for the successive years at least two times per season.
For a daily waxing you can use the cold wax (spray).

What is the difference?
Ski for the classic technique: they have particular features that allow to slide through the slopes by adapting themselves to the ground. The tip is very curve and flexible.
Skating ski: you will recognize them by the minimal curve of the tips that appears cut. The reason is that the skiing technique used is the one where you should keep an oblique angle towards the line of the maximum grade of the slope.
