The trekking of the legends
Trekking of the legends is a hiking route of around 200 km divided into 9 stages. The route crosses territories of the Fassa Valley (stop by Fiuciade hut - Contrin), Fiemme valley and San Martino di Castrozza-Primiero-Vanoi, giving you a wonderful opportunity to get to know our Dolomites - mountains that have inspired many legends about kings, queens, gnomes and fairies... at the dawn the sun rays seem to flame the dolomite rocks assuming a warm reddish color. This phenomenon is known as "Enrosadira".
The trekking of leggends is the first big ring that goes throughout the well signed and perfectly connected routes. You can admire mountains of Lagorai, Pale di San Martino, Marmolada, Sass Pordoi, Sella Towers, Catinaccio and Latemar.
The hiker will find all hospitality structures with services that suit his expectations, he can ask and receive necessary information and material that will help him to walk with no worries, he can get an alpine guide, a packet lunch, as well as transfer services and luggage transportation. Moreover, it's possible to download on a palm device all digital maps.

Distance covered in 5/6 hours

After a challenging start from the Fuciade hut on the Pellegrino Pass, go across a hard and steep path (signed as 607), that in this track identifies the High path nr. 2 of the Dolomites - "Italia Path". You climb up to the heart of Cirelle until you reach the Pass with the same name at the hight of 2683 m. Here you have a view of "above the sky" with peaks that are higher than 3000 m: you can see the unique profile of Pale di San Martino, the Cima Uomo chain, Ombert mount, Ombrettola peak and Sass Vernel, while to the north-east there is Marmolada - the queen of the Dolomites. You are in the heart of the ladin mountains, behind every stone you can see coming protagonists from legends.
Fortunately the downhill hiking is less steep. Really impressed by all this beauty, we follow the path nr. 607 that crosses big stones...here we have to pay a lot of attention. Under the Vernel Sass (Stone) we turn left descending towards the Contrin Hut (2016 m).

The climbing path of the finance policemen. In the heart of Ciampac bowl.
Gran Vernel
The Gran Vernel is situated at the hight of 3120 m in front of Marmolada close to Punta Penia. The itinerary that leads to its peak is very long and tiring. It takes around 5 hours only one way. The departure is from Fedaia Pass and the arrival is under the Pian dei Fiacconi. The start is really challenging and you have to pay a lot of attention. The uphill is not really safe but not so difficult. A major concentration require the Marmolada forcella and the difficult gravel that takes you to the Vernel fork which is situated between the Big (Gran) and Small (Piccolo) Vernels.
Duron Pass
The Duron Valley takes its origin from the Duron Pass (2168 m) and the mount Spiz (2684 m) and develops through grassy hills, cradled by the peaks of Sassolungo (3181 m) in the North and the large rocky plateaus of Catinaccio d'Antermoia (3004 m) in the South. The bottom of this valley is quite steep.
Departing from Campitello di Fassa, continuing through the ways of Rodella and Col, you reach the village of Pian. Continue until you are on the forest road nr. 532 that goes very steep up to the Micheluzzi Hut (1860 m). It will take you about 1.40 hours of walk. Afterwards, turning left, the route becomes easy and follows the cost of the river Duron, up to the dug up road where the uphill starts.
Once you left the Docoldaura Hut behind you, continue until you reach the Duron Pass at the height of 2204 m. From here you enter the Natural Park of Sciliar in the Siusi Alps, and by the way, in a short time you can reach the Molignon Hut.
The return to the valley is on the same path as you came, avoiding the deviation to Pian and going downhill directly to Campitello along the forest road nr. 532. For those departing from Canazei, it's possible to reach Pian by taking directly the new path that develops up from the hotel Caminetto, at the outskirts of the village.
Other variants: from the Micheluzzi Hut, take on your right the path nr. 533 that takes you to the path of Federico Augusto by the surrounding of Giogo di Fassa, where you will find Sassopiatto Hut (2297 m) at roughly one hour walk from the Micheluzzi Hut throughout the uniformly inclined plain that takes you to the peak of Sassopiatto (2964 m).
Sassolungo group
Where we talk about hikings on Sassolungo it comes easy to also talk about the Sella group, because of its close location and for the coincidence with the departure spots. While if you watch them, you couldn't imagine two groups that are more different than them: the Sassolungo group is really hunched and daring (3181 m), while the Sella group (dominated by the Piz Boè, 3151 m) is really massive. The union of the two of them creates the large "saddle" of the Sella Pass (2220 m) that let communicate the two valleys, the one of Fassa and the one of Gardena.
At the borders of Sassolungo group, you can find the Duron Pass (2168 m), that separates it from the Catinaccio and, to the North, the large meadow plateau of the Alpe di Siusi (around 2000 m). The Sella group, above Canazei, beside the pass having the same name, is also bounded by the Gardena Pass (2115 m, Puez group), the Campolongo pass (1875 m, Col di Lana) and by the Pordoi Pass (2239 m, Marmolada group).
Through the climbing way of Oscar Schuster you can reach the peak of Sassopiatto. All the other peaks can be reached only through alpine mountaineering ways.
The path that surrounds the group is very simple and can be hiked through in 4-5 hours departing from the Sella Pass and following the direction of huts like Emilio Comici (2140 m), Vicenza 2250 m), Sassopiatto (2300 m), Sandro Pertini and August. The total height difference is of about 200 meters.
From the Sella pass or from the Vicenza hut it is possible to reach the Sassolungo fork (2681 m), where you will find the Demetz hut. A cabin rope way connects it to the Sella pass.
Equipped path 0. Schuster to Sassopiatto
The departure point for this challenging 7 hour hike is the Demetz Hut (2681 m) by the Forcella Sassolungo and can be reached from the Sella Pass (2174 m) in two ways:
1.by the rope way departing from the pass;
2.by the path nr. 525 that follows the rope way's track. Time: about 1.15 h (not advisable).
From the Demetz Hut take the path 525 that starts to descend through the Sassolungo deep valley, with a view on vertical walls of Campanile di Venere (Venus' Bell tower - 2987 m), on your right. The Vicenza Hut can be reached through a short flat country crossing for about 45 minutes (2252 m). The junction point of the equipped itinerary of Oscar Schuster will be reached in 1 hour 40 and minutes. After about 1 hour of up walking you'll touch the Forcella delle Torri (Tower Fork - 2730 m). The peak in the middle of Sassopiatto can be reached in 3.40 hours (2955 m), there you will also see a metallic cross. From the summit you can go downhill following the track that goes to the western slope until the Sassopiatto Hut; from here you can reach the hut or deviate to the left for a green valley that allows you to cross the path nr. 4 (called "Federico Augusto") going above the Hut. Have a nice time!
It's really worth hiking because... From the hut's terrace on the Sassolungo Forcella you can enjoy a great view on the meadows of the Sella Pass and Marmolada's Glacier. The walls of Sassolungo (3069 m to Nort-East) and the ones of Cinque Dita ("Five Fingers" - 2996 m - South West). On the opposite slope, the Sassolungo Valley,
