Sassolungo

Sassolungo is one of the most famous and most beautiful groups of the Dolomites and it is situated between the valleys of Gardena and Fassa. Every year at the foot of these mountains skiing competitions as SuperG on the Saslong slope, with arrival at Santa Cristina Valgardena, are being organized.
The name of the mountain derives from an old legend that tells a story like this:

"Once upon a time, in the surroundings of the Sella massif, a people of goof giants lived there together with the people of the valley. Among the giants, there was one clever man called Sassolungo and he used to amuse himself by steal things from other fields, chicken yards giving the guilt to the rats, foxes or eagles. As his mates suspected him they decided to put an eye on him and soon they caught him robbing in several occasions. Sassolungo denied the evidence, but when for the third time they caught him in the act, they made a big meeting in one of the neighboring plots and the wisest man of the village got really angry and bewitched Sassolungo so that he sunk down into the earth. As Sassolungo was a really big giant, only his hand remained out of the ground. It can be seen even nowadays on Sassolungo mountain and it's called "Cinquedita" (five fingers).
Through the climbing path Oskar Schuster one can reach the Sassopiatto peak. While all the other peaks are reachable only by alpine climbing paths.
The path that surrounds the group is very simple and can be hiked over in 4-5 hours departing from Sella pass and crossing the huts: Emilio Comici (2140 m), Vicenza (2250 m), Sassopiatto (2300 m), Sandro Pertini and August. The hiking height difference is of about 200 meters.
From the Sella pass or the Vicenza hut it's possible to reach the forcella Sassolungo (2681 m) where one can stop the the Demetz hut. There is also a cabin rope way that connects it to the Sella pass.
